Sunday 10.31.04 dawned foggy and misty with a slight chill in the air, but it also held the promise of a delightful day, a promise which would bare delicious fruit! But first I had to get through the fog inside my head. The last time I had ridden was in Nevada at Interbike so my stuff was scattered through out the house, and of course I was too busy to prepare the night before so I stumbled around in the dark, but somehow I managed to get my stuff together, hey I even got my pants on right side out so we were off to a great start. I made a decision to dress up for this Halloween in Gotham ride as a stylish biker, and my associates would do like wise, well except for Sheri who actually is a stylish biker.
I was out walking the dog when Dan rode up silently and barked out "Hey old man!" Scared the heck out of me! Shortly we were on the (t)rusty LIRR and on our way into New York and the Sugoi, Elete, Powerfit, Mountain Hardwear evaluation ride. By the time we made New York, most of the fog had burned off and the promise of a great day of riding loomed large in our sights. Sheri met up with us on the corner of 34th & Eighth and the ride was on. With the sun warming our backs we charged West on 34th street. Little did we know that Orville was just showing up at that same corner. We thought he was a no show, but we were wrong! The Sunday morning traffic was light and the Bus/Parking lane on 34th street yielded plenty of room for cyclists. Sheri, who hadn't ridden since 9/12, on the AIDS Ride exclaimed, "Gee it's great to be back on the bike." I silently agreed but the grin we all shared on our faces told it all.
We made the Greenway at 34th and headed south, (as it turned out, Orville headed North, assuming that was the direction we would head in). We strategized that a counter-clockwise direction would get us through the crowded Battery Park and South Street Seaport areas before the big crowds. But all the plans soon dissolved into a simple ride of pure enjoyment.
