The Bike arrived on the anniversary of my birth a year ago, the perfect gift for a growing boy. All shiny, blue and silver with shiny black tires and a clean chain. It was a gift from my family, a Brand New Cannondale F300 Mountain bike! Well you could'a blown me away! It was a total surprise.

Now my birthday is in January, and yes I am an aquarian schmuck. So, the weather was not exactly what many folks would call prime biking weather, but then it is a mountain bike and the trails are generally more protected from the wind by trees than the roads are anyway, so out I went!

I soon found that I was finding excuses to ride the little bugger. It rapidly became my "errand bike." Since it had platform pedals, I could just hop on and pedal off. No spandex or funny shoes required! It was just a really nifty basic bike!

Simple Deli runs, plopping the Burley Delite trailer on the back and making bottle return runs, towing Olivia around, an easy comfortable ride for "Friendship Rides," I found the bike really convenient to just hop on and use.

Finally I got the chance to take the bike out on a real trail ride. I have ridden my son-in-law's old school rigid body mountain bike on the Bethpage trails before, and I face planted with astounding frequency. But this day I rode the Front Suspension Cannondale with nary a face plant. Several things had happened. First the geometry was ten years more advanced. Second, the bike was actually sized for me. Third, the gears actually worked. I had a blast.

Since that first trail ride, I have ridden the bike over the trails enough to actually make sense out of the trails in Bethpage Park, well mostly anyway So, some miles have, at this point, disappeared under the wheels.

On the road, the Cannondale F 300 is really confortable, but it is a Mountain Bike. So, although you can go fast, it is not designed with economy of effort in mind. The knobby tires and their low pressure inflation combine ot suck up energy fast, The compliant front fork sucks up pedal effort as well. It is a Purpose Built machine. In the dirt, getting around with this bike is effortless. There are much more complex bikes out there, but for an entry level bike this one was great. This years model has a differnet fork and some other changes, but if it is true to the Cannondale tradition, I am certain this year's version is even a little better.
