Sea and otter, two words that when said in conjunction with each other, bring to mind images of cute aquatic mammals, floating amongst the kelp beds of Monterey, eating abalone and just being cuddly. But not during the week of April 17th thru April 19th, during this time, sea otter can mean only one thing and that is the Sea Otter Classic.
For the last 18 years, the Sea Otter Classic has kick started the racing season here in the United States. Held annually at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area, you couldn’t ask for more from any event. Featuring everything from the Dual Slalom to raging Downhill action, from Short Track to Dirt Jump contests, from Cross Country runs to Road and Circuit races, the Sea Otter Classic has enough to keep even the biggest ADHD bike-head busy, then it is all topped off with instructional clinics taught by today’s hottest pro’s.
On top of all this fast flying racing and riding action, Sea Otter boasts a huge newly laid out vendor section where all the industry’s top producers like Giant, Trek and Specialized come to promote their wares right alongside the latest start-ups and independent builders. In the expo area visitors can also check out the latest in bike fashion, bike care products, energy drinks, skin care, body armor and coffee products all targeted at gear heads. It’s the see and be seen mecca of everything you salivate over in the bike mags you read.
Did I mention the Beer Garden? The overall vibe of Sea Otter couldn’t be more congenial. Even though some serious racing goes down the overall atmosphere is that of a festival. Pro riders can be seen at every turn hanging out and enjoying the scene just as much as the day-passers, who come to see these same pros racing. Together they check out the new products and hope to gather up some free swag from the exhibitors booths.
If you do make it out to Sea Otter, be sure to bring your bike because this event makes you want to get out and ride…
