Make it two for Trebon! After winning the 2006 NORBA National Championships cross country event, held in Sonoma, Ca in July, Ryan Trebon, (Kona), claimed his second national title at the California Giant Berry Farms USA Cycling National Cyclo-Cross Championships. 6'5" or so of unbridled power, he claimed his second national title today by jumping out to a 30 second lead in the first lap. Trebon never looked back, holding his lead the whole way to the stars-and-stripes jersey.
The race was held in Roger Williams Park, the jewel of Providence,RI., on what turned into a beautiful, sunny, 60 degree day. The dry, packed course provided for some high paced racing that had every spectator running around trying to follow the action, barely being able to keep up.
With Trebon having the race win on lockdown, the real battle was in the pack of five riders chasing him down. Two small chase groups came together for a peloton of five that included cyclocross heavy hitters Johnathan Page (Cervelo/HotTubes),Tim Johnson (Cannondale/Cyclocrossworld.com), defending national champion Todd Wells (GT/Hyundai), Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly), and Trebon's teammate Barry Wicks(Kona) who also happened to have taken 2nd at the NORBA Nationals event Trebon won in July.
Wicks controlled the pace of the chase group for most of today's race, sitting 2nd wheel ready to chase down anyone trying to rain on Trebon's parade, only faltering on the last lap to take 6th place. Wicks and Trebon have a long standing history of cooperation in other events, supporting each others strengths. Cyclocross is an event that rarely has team members competing in the same categories or events but, this very strong pair did today and thus controlled any attacks from the chase group. Had this otherwise cooperating attack been allowed to work fully in concert, the gap might have been narrowed.
